Biewers must have certain qualities to be qualified. Bitches
and Studs are to have a health check by a qualified
veterinarian prior to breeding. A signed statement from a
certified veterinarian must be submitted along with the
pedigrees, and application for a litter.
Breeding duration:
Bitches are recommended to be at least 1 yr at first breeding
and not older than 8 yrs at retirement. Minimum age of the
bitches 12 months, with studs 9 months. No age limit is
planned for the stud providing he is healthy.
Number of Litters:
Bitches are recommended to not breed back to back more than
three (3) times but left to breeders discretion. The litters must
be photographed and checked by a veterinarian and if visible
health faults are present, they must be noted by the physician.
A letter of health must be drawn up and signed by the
veterinarian for each litter confirming the check up.
Litter Acceptances:
Announce the arrival within 1 week of birth. At the age of 8
weeks or after, pups must have evaluation by vet: DNA, Micro
Chip or tattoo (left up to breeder), inoculations, wormer, stifles
checked. All this must be signed by vet to confirm.

Breed pairs:
Relative importance of the breeding pair must be from the same type, in other words,
bred only with healthy, pedigreed and steady Biewers as described in the standard. The
approved mating helps breeders select dogs suitable for breeding.
Litter announcement:
1 week after the birth of the litter, the breeder is responsible for notifying the registry of
the litter. Puppies must be kept until at least 10 weeks of age. The breeder is obligated to
notify the buyer of known defects or health issues of the puppy. The breeder is obligated
to have the puppies properly inoculated and wormed.
Identification:
Permanent identification, other than DNA testing, is not mandatory, but left to the
breeders discretion. DNA identification is mandatory on puppies and breed pairs.
Health Screening:
To provide full disclosure of any and all genetic abnormalities in the line, including
appropriate pedigrees, in order to facilitate research in avoiding the passage of these
defects.
Appropriate screening tests to be done that all puppies sold for pet or breeding use do
not harbour genetic diseases. A random bile acid test to be done with follow up fasting
testing if ANY abnormality.
Medical clearance including fecal for parasites and evaluation of patella luxations prior to
sale and shipment.
Shipment of puppies shall not occur before 10 weeks for German born puppies and 12
weeks for American born puppies, to avoid episodes of potentially fatal hypoglycemia.
Breeders will agree to advise the club if they produce a liver shunt puppy. They agree to
provide the pedigrees of the mother and father. The breeder further agrees to NEVER
breed the same sire and dam together again. The siblings of the affected puppies should
be neutered or spayed and sold as pets. If siblings were sold prior to breeder knowledge
of the shunt, every effort should be made to encourage the new owner NOT to breed
these puppies.
Tail docking is not permitted. Dew claws may or may not be removed at owners
discretion.

BBCI is pleased to announce that it has petitioned CERF to include the Biewer in its
registry database. CERF agreed to our request and will now issue certificates to Biewers
who pass their eye exams.
Biewer owner/breeders are urged to include this testing in their programs to ensure their
dog's are certified free of heritable eye disease before breeding. This is one more crucial
step to protect our beautiful breed.
Certificates are good for a period of one year. Eye exams are done annually by board
certified Canine Ophthalmologists. Many dog show venues, including AKC sanctioned
shows, offer clinics for the eye exams. Check with your local kennel clubs to see if they
have schedules listed for clinics in your area. For more information and CERF’s
schedules, go to http://www.vmdb.org/cerf.html
