Dr. Center is conducting a clinical study for the breed.  If anyone is interested in submitting one
of their Biewers in this study you can contact Dr. Sharon Center by email:
sac6@cornell.edu

Let her know that you are interested and she will fill you in on what is needed.  Or, if you need
more information contact the BBCI at
biewerbreedclubint@yahoo.com

The Biewer Health Registry also has been working with Dr. Sheila Schmutz of the University of
Saskatchewan in a genetic study of the Piebald gene in the Biewer.  This is a great  breakthrough
for the genetics concerning the color of the Biewer.  You can read more on this on our
Biewer
Health Registry  page.

Joke of the month

“Where should you never take a dog?”
Answer: “To a flea market!”
We would like to extend a warm welcome to our 11 new members, Shirley Skidmore, Michelle
Blackburn,Charlene Arbour, Leslie Campbell, Janice Robinson, Margie Staniszeski,   Sharon
Brown, Arlene Etzig and Nataly Fritsler .  We also have 2 new junior members who have
decided to get into the show world, they are Sara Beaune and Nicole-Marie Kibler.
Welcome new members...
Biewer Divas!
There are now 3 “famous” Biewers in our club that have made it onto the pages of ads and
magazines and websites!  The first one is " Imaree" who is loved and cherished by her owner
Cheryl Katz.  She is Dog of the Month on the web site Make & Build Dog Stuff.  Then we have
“Mandy” who is proudly loved and owned by Corinne.  Mandy has found her place in a Pet
Supplies catalog and store end caps while showing off her beautiful face modeling sweaters.
Way to go Mandy!  Then “Lilli”, who runs the Perry household, was graciously featured in the
German magazine “Mein Freund-der Rassehund” a quarterly publication that is put out by
the UCI in Germany.
In Momoriam
Sadly we would like to express our sympathy concerning the death of a friend that was a
pillar in the Yorkshire Terrier world.  Raymond Antonucci was killed this past March in his
home in Florida.  Raymond was a breeder/exhibitor since he was just a little boy, his kennel
name, “Parquins” has produced many top ranked Yorkies throughout the years.  We will miss
you, your conversations and your vast knowledge Raymond.  May he rest in peace.

BBCI WINS BIEWER RECOGNITION WITH CERF – Canine Eye Registration
Foundation

BBCI is pleased to announce that it has petitioned CERF to include the Biewer in its registry
database.  CERF agreed to our request and will now issue certificates to Biewers who pass their
eye exams.

Biewer owner/breeders are urged to include this testing in their programs to ensure their dog's
are certified free of heritable eye disease before breeding.  This is one more crucial step to
protect our beautiful breed.

Certificates are good for a period of one year.  Eye exams are done annually by board certified
Canine Ophthalmologists.  Many dog show venues, including AKC sanctioned shows, offer
clinics for the eye exams.   Check with your local kennel clubs to see if they have schedules listed
for clinics in your area.  For more information and CERF’s schedules, go to

We currently have over 127 Biewers registered in the Biewer Breed  International
Registry with many more in the wings.
Our numbers of registered Biewers is
growing daily and we are very proud of our accomplishments in this regard!  Thank
you Theresa Perry for all your hard work and dedication!!!!

The BBIR, Biewer Breed International Registry will accept registrations from any
owner who holds a true German Registered Biewer and who wishes to  obtain
registry here in the USA.

This registry is a separate entity from the BBCI in that they will hold the registries for
dogs either born here or that have been imported from Germany.  They will also
register full litters similar to how the AKC works.

This will help keep track of the population of the Biewers that are here in the States
and in Canada.  This registry is open to ALL Biewer owners and you DO NOT have to
be a member of the BBCI.  Here is a link to our Registry.

Congratulations to all who participated in shows this spring!  We are still waiting for a
couple more people to turn in their wins so check back to see updates!!
Hello to all our friends.  It’s been a very busy spring and summer so far!  All kinds of things have been
happening with the club and it’s members.  As you all know by now the BBCI had it’s first Biewer
Specialty,
http://bbci.homestead.com/firstBBCISpecialty2008.html held in Reading PA in March.
With an impressive 33 Biewers shown under the universal standard that has been followed since
2003.  It was a fantastic time and we hope that everyone who participated enjoyed themselves.  It
was a lot fun and we hope to do it again as soon as we can.  It’s always nice to get together with
other Biewer lovers and talk about our dogs.

Many of us were meeting for the first time as many of our friendships have been cultivated over the
Internet and with phone calls.  Finally for the first time we finally got to meet face to face and now
we can finally put a face to all the names that are familiar to each of us!  That was so nice!  We are
already planning the 2nd Annual BBCI Specialty next year!
We are happy to announce that our club has been diligently working on putting together our
“Biewer Health Registry” that will deal with genetic and communicable diseases in this breed.
This is an ongoing process that will hopefully one day help our breed with any future hereditary
issues.

One of our members, Liza Morffiz, attended a seminar in New York City in February that was
held by the YTCA in which Dr. Sharon Center from Cornell University was the guest speaker.  Dr.
Center is a well known Doctor in her field of Canine Research and has been working on
developing a DNA marker to identify a potential carrier of Liver Shunt. If this becomes a reality it
will help immensely in the future of many breeds.   Here is a link to a rundown of information;
